A brief history of how the last Shogunate of Japan got utterly fucked:

Alright so sit down and listen, I just read about 80 pages of shit I should have read 2 months ago so I need to share the love, this is what I got from the reading I was supposed to do ages ago:

Tokugawa Shogunate accepted treaty with Harris in 1858, causing the court to be ANGERED and like WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT TOKUGAWA? WE FUCKING HATE WESTERNERS! DISAPPOINT!
In order to repair the rift between Shogunate and Emperor, Choshu sidles in and tries to get some political power by acting as a mediator between Tokugawa and Emperor.
UNFORTUNATELY, Satsuma gave the court a better deal, became the top-dogs of mediation between Tokugawa and Emperor.
Choshu then go 110% hard and adopt a daimyo-wide stance of WE FUCKING LOVE THE EMPEROR (=LOYALISTS!).
Satsuma gets real mad and stages a military coup against the court, seizing the court in the process.
Choshu does some real dumb shit in Kyoto and burns like 2/3 of the city.
The court acknowledge that Choshu is now full-retard and tells Choshu that you never go full retard before declaring it an enemy of the court.
Meanwhile in Choshu, they kicking themselves like god we are fucking retarded, and then fucking British and Co.™ try to invade their fucking daimyo, purchases weapons from Western civilization while being like FUCK THE WEST MAN THESE GUYS SUCK.
MEANWHILE Tokugawa gettin’ real tired of this shit decides to just say fuck it and fuck up the Choshu cause they want to suck some Emperor D real bad, so they actually fuck up Choshu real hard.
At the end of 1864, after getting completely fucked by Tokugawa Keisho, a fucking civil war breaks out and the loyalists win.
Tokugawa comes back in 1866 like GUYS I NEED TO SUCK SOME MORE EMPEROR D and attacks them but gets utterly fucked in return, not realizing that Choshu has in fact been sucking the Emperor’s D harder and faster than Tokugawa can even hope to suck the D.
As a further kick in the pants, Satsuma, who up until now fucking hated Choshu, is like hey Choshu, we’ll join up with you and destroy the Tokugawa Shogunate.
Choshu is like K BRO and they proceed to do so.
Tokugawa is utterly fucked and gives up his power as a shogun and basically that’s how the last shogun of japan was trounced.

merlin notices them both and tries to encourage it, pushing it on arthur because he think it’s what arthur wants, becomes #1 arwen fanboy

convinces himself that gwen is good for him, at least she wants him, etc
meanwhile merlin obviously pining away
arthur more subtlely pining away
gwen having her feelings “that will never fade” still on the insides
NO ONE IS HAPPY
